Why God?

In our contemporary culture in the Western World people tend to be rather skeptical about God. Many have been those in the last century who followed in Nietzsche's footsteps proclaiming boldly that God is dead. Changes have occurred even in the last decade though.

People are far more open and interested in 'spirituality' (the term has a variety of multiple meanings). Chris Carter, the creator of the 'X Files', speaks on behalf of many when he writes: 'I'm a non-religious person looking for a religious experience.'

However much we try, we cannot escape our hunger for something else, for a deeper sense of purpose in life. Denying God's existence simply increases our sense of despair and confusion. Albert Camus once stated: ' Man cannot live without meaning. '

It is very important not to be smug about this issue. There is plenty of mystery with regards to God. There is much that is and will remain still unknown. Rather than focusing on that, we must look at what we know about God.

In Jesus, God demonstrated all we needed to know about His character, nature and qualities - and we must take notice of all that. "But now in these last days, God has spoken to us through his Son... The Son reflects the glory of God and shows exactly what God is like." (Hebrews 1: 2-3)
