Why Christianity?

Often Christianity has been misunderstood both by insiders and outsiders. Many things done in the name of Christianity were (and sadly, still are) anything but flattering for the name of Christ. Slavery, crusades, racism are just some of the things that should have never been associated with Christianity.

In our post-modern society where relativism rules, many would look at Christianity as simply one-of-many alternative ways of 'spiritual' fulfillment. Many people have rejected institutionalized forms of religion and have a 'designer' approach to religion.

As Miranda Sawyer wrote in an editorial in the trendy style magazine The Face: 'The Nineties' quest for life and some sort of authenticity, coupled with a gradual loss of faith in the capacity of big ideals to save our souls, has led us to make up our own truths, build our own small worlds as best we can.'

The fundamental mistake people make is approaching Christianity as a religion. Nicky Gumbel, the creator of the successful Alpha course, explains it like this: 'Christianity is first and foremost about relationships than rules. It is about the most important relationship of all: our relationship with the God who made us.'

We believe in what Dietrich Bonhoeffer called 'religionless Christianity'. It's the Christianity that isn't simply an attempt by good human beings to live morally so that they can please God and earn a place in Heaven. Christianity is a relationship with God - a relationship that is possible only when people have come to accept Jesus' forgiving grace.

Christians are those who follow Jesus' teaching and live as servants of God. They demonstrate the reality of the empowering and purifying presence of God's Spirit in their lifestyle 24/7.

Christianity is a life lived at the max - as the Creator of life itself intended it. As Jesus declared, 'A thief comes only to steal and destroy but I came to give life - life in all its fullness.' (John 10:10)
